What is BIS or ISI ?

BIS Certification (ISI Mark) is a certification provided by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the national standards body of India, which operates under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution. The ISI (Indian Standards Institution) mark is a quality certification mark that ensures that products meet specific quality, safety, and performance standards. The mark is recognized nationwide and is a guarantee to consumers about the reliability and safety of products.

What is BIS Certification ?

The BIS Certification or ISI Mark is a symbol of trust and quality that assures consumers that a product meets the required standards set by BIS. It helps in building consumer confidence by ensuring that the product adheres to safety, quality, and environmental norms. BIS certification is mandatory for certain products in India, especially in sectors like construction, food, electrical appliances, and more.

Different BIS Certification Schemes

BIS offers different schemes for certification based on the type of product, industry, and the certification requirements. These schemes ensure that manufacturers meet the requisite quality standards for the products they produce.

1.      Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS):

-       Mandates BIS registration for specific products, including electronics, electrical items, and household goods.

-       Ensures that products meet prescribed safety and quality standards before being sold in the Indian market.

2.     Voluntary Certification Scheme (VCS):

-       Allows manufacturers to obtain BIS certification for products not covered under CRS to demonstrate quality assurance.

-       Enhances market credibility and consumer trust for products not subject to mandatory registration.

3.     Product Certification Scheme (ISI Certification) (PCS):

-       The ISI Mark is issued under this scheme and ensures that products meet the Indian Standard specifications.

-       It is applicable to a wide range of products including electrical items, industrial goods, food products, chemicals, and construction materials.

4.    Hallmarking Scheme (for Gold and Silver) (HMS):

-       This certification is specifically for precious metals like gold and silver jewelry.

-       It certifies that the jewelry conforms to the quality standards for purity and weight.

5.     Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS):

-       This scheme allows foreign manufacturers to get BIS certification for their products sold in India.

-       It ensures that foreign products imported into India also meet the standards of safety and quality as per Indian regulations.

6.    Standard Mark Scheme (SMS):

-       This is applied to products that fall under the BIS Standard Mark, ensuring that they conform to a particular Indian Standard (IS).

7.     Quality Management Systems Certification (ISO Certification) (QMSC):

-       BIS also offers certifications based on ISO standards, ensuring that organizations meet international quality management practices.

8.    Environmental Management Systems Certification (ISO 14001) (EMSC):
